Traditional amalgam fillings contain a mix of metals (silver, tin, copper) held together by liquid mercury — a known neurotoxin. While widely used in the past, these fillings not only discolor over time but can also release mercury vapor during chewing, grinding, or removal. Even trace exposure to mercury has been linked to irritability, headaches, fatigue, and in high levels, damage to the brain and kidneys.

Dr. Golden believes no level of mercury exposure is acceptable — especially when better alternatives exist. We use advanced, tooth-colored materials that bond directly to enamel, look natural, and eliminate the risks associated with metal-based dentistry. When old amalgams need to be removed, we follow strict safety protocols (as recommended by IAOMT) to protect both patients and staff from airborne mercury vapor.
