Covered Socket Residuum (CSR) – Incomplete Jawbone Healing After Extraction
Some oral health concerns begin in places that aren’t immediately visible — including within the jawbone after a tooth has been removed. Covered Socket Residuum (CSR) refers to areas where an extraction site appears healed on the surface, but deeper bone remodeling remains incomplete beneath intact gum tissue.
CSR can occur when normal bone regeneration is interrupted, leaving behind less mineralized or biologically inactive tissue inside the jawbone. These areas are most commonly found in sites of past extractions, including wisdom teeth, and may not be visible on standard dental X-rays.
Although CSR may not cause obvious local symptoms, incomplete jawbone healing can be relevant when planning future dental procedures such as implants, or when evaluating chronic oral inflammation. Ongoing research suggests that identifying and addressing areas of compromised bone healing may support better surgical outcomes and long-term oral stability.
At Golden Dental Biologics, Dr. Linda Golden uses advanced 3D imaging and biological evaluation to assess jawbone healing more thoroughly than traditional 2D imaging allows. This approach helps determine whether bone regeneration has progressed as expected and whether supportive regenerative care may be beneficial. For patients with a history of extractions or unresolved oral concerns, evaluating jawbone healing can provide valuable clinical insight.

Hidden Trouble Spots – CSR refers to incompletely regenerated bone beneath healed gum tissue after extraction
Biological Assessment – Identifying CSR can support thoughtful planning for implants and restorative care
Advanced Imaging – 3D scans allow evaluation of jawbone healing beyond what standard X-rays reveal
