Orthodontic FAQ

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics, also known as dentofacial orthopedics, is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial irregularities.

What is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has completed an additional two to three years of focused training beyond dental school. They are experts in straightening teeth, correcting jaw alignment, and improving the overall function and aesthetics of your smile.

What’s the best age to visit the orthodontist?

Any age is a good age if you’re looking to improve your smile. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation around age seven. That said, orthodontic care isn’t just for kids—about one in five patients today is over the age of 21.

How can I take care of my teeth if I’m wearing braces or a retainer?

Brush after every meal and floss at least once a day. Use toothpaste with Xylitol to help prevent cavities. If you remove your retainer to eat, brush and floss before putting it back in—and always store it safely in its case. Clean your retainer regularly with a toothbrush and toothpaste, or soak it in denture cleaner if recommended. Avoid boiling water or dishwashers. Limit sugary foods, and skip anything sticky, chewy, or hard that could damage your braces. And don’t forget to keep seeing your family dentist for checkups every six months.

What are braces?

Braces are orthodontic devices used to gradually shift and straighten your teeth. Options include clear braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces, self-ligating braces, and invisible aligners. Your orthodontist will help you choose the best fit for your needs and lifestyle.

If I get braces, how long do I have to wear them?

Treatment time varies for each person, depending on your unique smile and needs. Most people wear braces for 6 to 30 months, with the average treatment lasting around 22 months.

Do braces hurt?

Braces don’t usually hurt, but you may feel some initial discomfort for a few days as your mouth adjusts. After that, most patients quickly adapt to the feeling.

Do I need to brush my teeth more often if I have braces?

Yes. You should brush at least three times a day and floss daily to keep your mouth healthy and prevent plaque buildup. Your orthodontist can show you the best brushing and flossing techniques for cleaning around brackets and wires.

If I have braces, do I still need dental checkups every six months?

Definitely. In fact, it’s even more important. Braces can trap food in hard-to-reach places, so regular dental cleanings help prevent cavities and gum disease. Your dentist and orthodontist will work together to make sure your teeth stay healthy throughout treatment.

Will my braces interfere with school activities like sports, playing an instrument, or singing?

Not at all. You might need a short adjustment period, especially with musical instruments or contact sports, but braces shouldn’t stop you from doing any of your favorite activities. For sports, a mouthguard is highly recommended to protect your braces and your mouth.
