VELscope Oral Cancer Screening

Early detection is one of the most important tools in protecting oral health. The VELscope is a handheld screening device that helps dentists identify abnormal tissue in the mouth that may not be visible during a standard visual exam. Using a special blue light, the device allows Dr. Golden to observe how oral tissues naturally fluoresce, helping highlight areas that may require closer evaluation.

Healthy tissue reflects this light differently than tissue that is inflamed or abnormal. This means the VELscope can sometimes reveal subtle changes beneath the surface of the oral tissue that might otherwise go unnoticed. The exam is quick, painless, and performed as part of a routine oral health evaluation.

While the VELscope is not a diagnostic tool on its own, it provides an additional layer of insight that helps guide further examination when needed. When used alongside a traditional clinical exam and patient history, it supports early identification of potential concerns and allows patients to take a proactive approach to their oral health.
